Past EASTBIO Induction Events

Induction Day 2021

The Induction Day events for the new intake of students starting in autumn 2021 was held online across two half days, the 11th and the 12th of October. Induction was followed by an online Training Day - with a Masterclass on Statistics and Experimental Design delivered by Dr Graham Horgan (Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland (BioSS) - on the 13th of October. Both events are mandatory for new students while supervisors are strongly encouraged to attend the first two days.

Our student reps and the EASTBIO DTP Manager invited all new students to an informal (optional) drop-in session, the week before these events, on the 6 October 2021, 12:00-14:00 (Zoom link and the summary was sent to all students directly). The session was unstructured and aimed to enable everyone to meet their colleagues and student reps, share initial impressions and ask our second- and third-year student reps questions about PhD life and EASTBIO DTP.

Schedule and updates of the two Induction Days are also communicated directly to new starts and their supervisors. Please contact EASTBIO at any point should you have any questions about the start of our Training Programme.

Induction Day 2020

We warmly welcome our new student cohort and supervisors!

We are delighted to meet all our new students at the EASTBIO online Pre-Induction session (30 Sept 2020)

The EASTBIO Induction 2020 will be held online from 10:00-13:00 across two days, on the 7th and 8th of October 2020, followed by a Training Day on the 9th of October, with a Foundation Masterclass on Statistics and Experimental Design, delivered by Dr Graham Horgan (James Hutton Institute/Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland). These events are mandatory for students and strongly encouraged for supervisors, especially those new to EASTBIO. We will try to accommodate students whose individual circumstances make it hard for them to attend these events synchronically.

Students are also invited to a pre-Induction meet-up session, held online on the 30 September, 12:00-14:00 (Zoom link to be circulated directly to students). They are joined by EASTBIO students reps (second- and third-years) and the EASTBIO administrator for an informal discussion and an opportunity to ask questions and meet everyone.

EASTBIO Director, Professor Clare Blackburn

The Induction is largely informal and, together with information about our Training Programme, key requirements and researcher support, it provides the opportunity for interactions across the student cohort, our academic and management community. We encourage all new students, and their supervisors, to read carefully the new Student Handbook before attending the Induction.

For any questions, please email us. In case of queries to do with student registration, payment of stipend and fees, etc., please check the local administrative support at your local institution.

Induction Day 2019

The EASTBIO Induction was held in Dundee, West Park Conference Centre (319, Perth Road, Dundee DD2 1NN), on Tuesday the 8th of October. We thank our speakers, Dr Caroline Pope (EASTBIO Placement Coordinator) and Dr Gerold Baier (UCL) for their presentations and interactions with students and supervisors, as well as our second-year student reps - Ana Rozman, Amy Cooper, Alysha Knight and Liat Adler - who helped with the Q&A and the break-out sessions.

Induction included a Training Day, with a Foundation Masterclass on "Statistics and Experimental Design", delivered by Dr Margo Chase-Topping (same venue, 9 of October, 9:00-13:00). The two-day event was attended by all new students and the majority of supervisors.
